Introduction: Governmental Structure

The federal government of the United States is divided into three branches: the Executive, the Legislative, and the Judicial. These branches work together to govern, but each has distinct powers and responsibilities.

The below graphic illustrates the three main branches of government.  All three branches were established within the Constitution, which provided the basis for the separation of powers within the U.S. Government.  Additionally, all three branches have different roles, bodies, and powers.  We will go more into each of the three branches in the next section.  Before then, there will be a quick quiz to make sure you have the basics.  Make sure you study the chart below first, as anything from the chart can be in the quiz!!
